Introduction

The BIC (Bioinformatics Cell) was established within the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC) at Fort Detrick, Maryland in the Spring of 2002. The BIC was established in recognition of the need to develop in-house expertise in the quickly growing and rapidly changing area of bioinformatics and, in particular, medical informatics. The BIC is part of the research arm of the USAMRMC Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center (TATRC).

The BIC works together with USAMRMC life scientists and establishes strategic alliances and partnerships with industry, academia, Department of Defense, and other government agencies to monitor and and participate in new and emerging technology developments in medical informatics. In particular, the BIC's research portfolio focuses on developing improved methods for the modeling and analysis of physiological data. The ability to extract new or better information from physiological data can be applied to refine the diagnosis or prediction of a patient's current and future physiological state. The BIC research products will ultimately provide aid to caregivers in the prevention or care of injuries.

Application Areas:

  • Trauma Physiology Database and Analysis System
  • Physiological Data Qualification Algorithms
  • Medical Caregiver Decision-Assist Algorithms for the Diagnosis of Pathophysiological States
  • Prediction of an Individual's Future Physiologic State
